Scholarship for Academic Excellence
“Let everything take second place to our care of our children, our bringing them up to the discipline and instruction of the Lord. If from the beginning we teach them to love true wisdom, they will have great wealth and glory than riches can provide”
St. John Chrysostom, Homilies on Ephesians, Homily 21
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I greet you in the Name of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ!
Through the grace of God, we would like to announce that St. George church is launching
“The St. George Church Scholarship for Academic Excellence, in memory of Daniel Elias, Marianne El Souri, and Judy Filmore”
Stewardship is a crucial part of our Orthodox Christian faith. It is not a temporary effort, but rather a life-long commitment to applying our faith to our everyday life experiences. In His love for mankind, our Lord has given us everything we have, and in return, we should give back to Him. Our Lord calls us to help the least of our brethren so we can show our love to Him (Mat 25:31-46). We can give back through works of charity, by loving our neighbors (Luke 10:27), and by utilizing the “Three T’s”: talent, time, treasure, and offering them back to the church.
St. George Church, through this scholarship, wishes to promote the importance of scholarship and stewardship within our church community. The funds for this scholarship were donated in memory of three pillars of our parish who passed into eternal life. Daniel Elias, Marianne El Souri, and Judy Filmore were true examples of how to live a Christian life based on love and helping others. In different capacities, they exemplified true dedication to the church and supported her different ministries; in the choir, through the work of the LMBS (the Ladies of the Myrrh Bearing Society), by ensuring all parish events are taken care of.
May the memory of Daniel, Marianne, and Judy be eternal and may we follow in their footsteps by God’s grace!
With the love of God,
Fr. John and the Community of St. George Church
